be healthy . . have purpose . . dream big!
On August 25, 2008, I was on a path of sickness and disease. That day I had my "last supper"; a high-fat birthday meal at a wonderful Italian restaurant. A simple decision changed it all, and now, with the guidance of a few brilliant individuals, I'm on a different voyage . . . one of health, fulfillment and even adventure. On that date in August, I was a well paid corporate executive, with all the stressful trappings that went along with my position, I was clinically obese, had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, back pain, feet pain, suffered from depression and had very little energy to enjoy those things that I thought were most important to me. August 26, 2008, was day one of my second life!
Today, I'm on no medications (I was on three), I don't have to sleep with that awful mask on my face any more, I have no back or feet pain, my energy level is ever increasing and I'm planning to do things that, for the last twenty years, I thought would be impossible for me. And, oh, by the way, I have no boss! (Well . . with the exception of my lovely wife, Phyllis!) Although I have a long way to go, I am now regaining my physical and moral compass and, along with Phyllis, seven daughers, two wonderful son-in-laws and four grandchildren, I'm on a voyage of health, purpose and dreams! VoyageOfHealth.com is all about one thing: Sharing that guidance and voyage with you so you, too, can benefit from the wonderful works, programs and stories of my esteemed colleagues in health to overcome the forces (which include food companies, drug companies, product manufacturers, fast food and other restaurants, media, etc.) that are literally working against us (all in the interest of making more and more profits), to be healthy, vibrant and live long, active lives. Our nation's current health crisis, although tragic in its impact on the lives of millions (190 million adults are in need of support and realiable guidance to reclaim their health), also offers a tremendous opportunity to health care professionals and business entreprenuers who are purpose driven, understand the long term potential of providing a service of compelling and sustainable value, and are willing to learn and do the work necessary to make their dreams come true.
In this time of economic and political turmoil, the wellness industry promises to be robust over the next couple of decades. Along with the tremendous growth there are many "charlatains" and "snake oil products" that are flooding the market.
At VoyageOfHealth.com we've done our due diligence to find the right people, companies and programs to align with for those professionals who are ready to jump on board and help thousands, if not millions, to reclaim their ability to be the dominant force in their own lives and create optimal and sustainable health in their minds and bodies. Let's face it! The healthcare system is NOT about "health", it's NOT about "caring" and, as a system, it's BROKEN!
The "caring" part (or lack, thereof) is very familiar to me, having devoted over twenty years of service as a registered nurse in hospital and clinical environments.
From the beginning of my nursing career, like most others, it was about patient care to me. But over time, the "system" seemed to become more and more focused on profits, taking me further and further away from my passion of helping people.
The reality is, our current medical system is firmly entrenched in a disease management mode and true, sustainable health is just not on the radar screen. And, in spite of all of the wonderful advancements in medical technology and proceedures, according to the CDC, over half of the adults in the US suffer from one or more chronic illnesses. One fourth of those individuals have at least one activity limitation.
Chronic diseases like hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis, fibromyalgia, arthritis and chronic pain account for over 80 percent of the healthcare budget and the incident rates of these disease processes are on the rise.
Contributing largely to the chronic disease problem, over seventy percent of adults are overweight and more than one third are clinically obese with estimated rates expected to reach fifty percent by the year 2030, unless there is a dramatic intervention to these trends.
The quality of life is in a state of degradation for over two thirds of our general population due to lifestyle related illnesses, while healthcare providers are frustrated because they don't have the tools, training or time to do anything about it.
At the same time, the food industry, fast food chains, media and corporations who are dedicated to making life easier (i.e., more sedentary) are profiting greatly from a population that is in a increasing state of "unhealth".
I was fortunate to have been introduced to a role that promises to lead the way as we enter into the next phase of medicine; creating optimal health. The role is that of a health coach. In becoming a health coach, I have been able to reconnect to my true passion, caring for and nurturing people to empower them to create permanent health, and am more fulfilled by my work than ever before. I finally feel like I'm living the life of a "true health professional"!
As awareness of our nation's health crisis grows, and more and more people realize that medications and treatments are not the answers to feeling badly and chronic illnesses, the role of the health coach is well positioned to help turn these trends around, assist in creating health in the lives of others and allowing health providers to benefit greatly, both instrinsically and financially. What greater purpose is there than to help others to create optimal health in their lives in the face of the sick and obesigenic environment that we live in.
